Love + Violence, Hearts + Clubs
In juxtapositions of love and violence the multimedia artist Sterling Ruby’s exhibition at the Pierre Marie Giraud gallery explores Hearts + Clubs
The heart and the club – juxtaposed symbols of love and violence come together in artist Sterling Ruby’s third solo show which is currently on show at Pierre Marie Giraud gallery, Brussels. The exhibition, Sterling Ruby – Hearts + Clubs, is a body of ceramic works in which clay forms are molded into figurative and totemic objects of deep emotion.
The rough and irregular objects capture the urgency of the subject matter with which they deal with and embody the energy and speed with which they were made. The pieces are finished with a shiny enamel and metallic lusters that contrast the uneven forms.
Sterling Ruby works in a wide range of materials from polyurethane, bronze, steel and ceramic sculptures; to drawings and collages; photography and video; spray-paint and oil paintings; as well as textile works, including quilts, tapestries, garments and soft sculptures. His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris amongst many others.
Sterling Ruby – Hearts + Clubs will be on display until October 6.
