Making a strong case for the value of revived American craft, Apparatus forms nobel hand-worn metal, stone, wood, moulded and blown glass into sculptural light fixtures. However bespoke, luxurious and formally sound, each contemporary design draws from a bygone industrial aesthetic; be it colour-tone or clear geometry. Bringing together the fashion and interior design savior faire of creative director Gabriel Hendifar with co-founder Jeremy Anderson’s public relations sagesse – the New York-based duo applies the same meticulous and hand-assembled approach to their own line of Finishes, goblet-like Incense holders, interlocking teeth Candel Blocks, Sift Porcelain tableware and Strata Study wall-coverings-cum-textiles. TLmag recently discovered Apparatus’ ethereal yet solid gamut during Milan Design Week 2015. Pendant and ceiling lamp Horsehair reveals the studio’s foray into playful experimentation. Wefts of coarse equine hair suspend between weight-bearing loop- formed barrels while light projects through equally cylindric etched-glass. Neural-inspired Synapse confronts two hand-moulded domes that almost meet at the intersection of a bras orb while Triad postulates cone-encapsulated bulbs into angular direction thanks to a trigonometric structure. Navigation and nautical influences play heavy on Compass but French aerialist Philippe Petit staked his claim with counter-balanced Highwire.
