Design Miami Paris returns this week for its fourth edition, running October 20–25 at L’hôtel de Maisons, an 18th-century mansion in the Faubourg Saint-Germain district of the 7th arrondissement (51 rue de l’Université). Tuesday, October 20 is an invitation-only preview day, with public days following from October 21 through 25. The fair runs alongside Art Basel Paris.
Design Miami was founded in 2005, and its flagship Miami Beach fair still takes place each December. The brand has since expanded into local editions, including annual fairs, each hosted in. a specific architectural setting, as well as Design Miami In Situ, which offers regionalized experiences. For Paris, that setting is the residential grandeur of the mansion, which CEO Jen Roberts described as magnificent. She noted that the city “has embraced Design Miami as its own.”
More than 20 international galleries are presenting, with several genres of design presented across the booths. French historic design is presented by Galerie Mitterand, with works by Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, including a pair of Singes Attentifs. Laffanour | Galerie Downtown brings Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Isamu Noguchi and Charlotte Perriand. Galerie Maxime Flatry presents a rare 1930s modernist ensemble centered on Robert Mallet-Stevens, shown with Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray and Pierre Legrain. Scandinavian design includes debut exhibitor Modernity (Stockholm), showing a rare Frits Henningsen wingback chair and a Josef Frank Flora cabinet. Hostler Burrows presents a monumental hand-tufted carpet by Louise Hederström, produced with Kasthall in Sweden.
Artist jewellery is a notable presence. Galerie MiniMasterpiece shows wooden necklaces by Luis Quesada that have never been shown in France, and Elisabetta Cipriani Gallery makes its debut with Sheila Hicks’ Cosmic Jewellery and Sophia Vari’s final necklace. Italian design comes from NILUFAR (Milan) and Galleria Rossella Colombari, while Galerie kreo offers lighting from Virgil Abloh to Jasper Morrison.
The Design at Large program spreads ambitious, large-scale works across the courtyard, interior and gardens. The standout is Galerie Patrick Seguin’s 1944 Jean Prouvé 6×6 Demountable House, a landmark of post-war prefabricated architecture. In the garden, Galerie Gastou presents Irene Cattaneo’s bronze swings inspired by the opening of Effi Briest, Galerie Negropontes shows Gianluca Pacchioni’s rusted-iron sculpture Halga, and Craftica Gallery unveils a birch plywood bench by Cyryl Zakrzewski.
