Anthony Caro at Galerie Templon
An exhibition of Sir Anthony Caro’s sculpture is being staged at the Galerie Templon, Brussels, until July 22.
“In a way, sculpture is in the middle, between painting and architecture – and abstract sculpture even more so,” said Sir Anthony Caro, renowned for reinvograting contemporary British sculpture. “It’s nearly architecture, it’s nearly painting. It’s in the middle. And we have to find that place in the middle.”
The interplay between architecture and sculpture in Caro’s work is emphasised in an exhibition staged at the Galerie Daniel Templon, Brussels, until July 22. In the gallery are his last works made before his death – gargantuan Perspex and mixed-media compositions. These contrast a second series, his smaller Table Pieces, in the project room.
The juxtaposition in scale, material and expression of the two series exemplify the range and constant reinvention of Caro’s practice. The Table Pieces each play with concepts of dynamic balance and demonstrate how the negative space itself is Caro’s material and expression. The Last Sculptures give insight into the diversity of Caro’s materials and his masterful use of paint and colour.
Caro was a student of Henry Moore, and knighted by the Queen of England in 1987. He passed away in 2013.
